Linux is a well maintained, mature Operating System. Linux was born in 1991, but was modeled on Unix, an Operating system dating back to 1969. Rather than trying to "Re-invent the wheel" every few years, Linux has continued to build on is successes, while encorporating cutting edge technology as it becomes available.
